Curton Collymore Wins WJL Game Changer Award

The Windjammer Landing employee nominated for the “Game Changer of the Year Award,” must have over the period exhibited the ultimate spirit of sportsmanship in his particular sporting discipline.  In addition, the individual would have had to demonstrate that the achievement on the field of play had a positive impact on his performance at work, in terms of service delivery.

Curton Collymore has undoubtedly met that prerequisite. Although an all around sportsman, he is best known for his prowess on the soccer field. Curton represents his club 18 Plus in the Dennery Community League Football Competition. His skill as a defender has earned him selection on the Dennery Football Team, where he plays in both the St. Lucia Football Association Cup and the Blackheart Competition. His endurance as a player over the years has also earned him a selection spot in the Dennery Veterans Football Team.  In all of that, he is able to sustain the strength and skill to ably represent the Windjammer Team in the Hotel and Tourism Football Competition as well as in the Gros Islet Football League. It can be said with confidence that the reason for opposing teams finding it difficult to find the back of the net against Windjammer is due to the presence of Curton in the defense. In all competition, Curton has stood out as a very disciplined and committed player. He gives his all in every game and is a fierce competitor. Curton enters each game with his singular goal being the glory of victory.  That notwithstanding, he will not sacrifice fair play to achieve his preferred end result.  This has gained him the respect and admiration of his team members and opponents alike.  A true attribute of a sportsman who is indeed a game player.

Saint Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) is 50 years old! The electricity company observes the milestone anniversary on Tuesday, July 1, 2014.

LUCELEC Managing Director Trevor Louisy says the occasion is a cause for celebration and reflection, a time to “celebrate what we have accomplished, yes, but also to reflect on what lies ahead, regroup, and prepare ourselves for the next 50 years.”

The LUCELEC Managing Director adds, as significant a milestone as this is, in commemorating the occasion, the company is mindful of the current operating environment.

Culinary Ambassador to Showcase Saint Lucia like Never Before

The island’s lone Culinary Ambassador Nina Compton-Miller is on a mission to highlight Saint Lucia on the international culinary stage in novel ways. The first runner-up and fan favorite in the most recent “Top Chef New Orleans” series was recently appointed as the first Culinary Ambassador of Saint Lucia. Compton-Miller hopes to inspire legions of foodies and visitors to the island with promises of indigenous ingredients and forward thinking food producers.
The now-famous chef plans to use all of the advantages of growing up in an epicurean’s paradise, on an island that possesses an endless supply of fresh fruits and vegetables, a variety of ethnic influences, and access to some of the world’s best seafood. Chef Nina earlier this month again demonstrated her cooking prowess and shared her passion for Saint Lucia and by extension Caribbean cuisine, when she wowed audiences in Miami, USA as she appeared on the popular NBC 6 Morning Show as part of “Taste of the Caribbean,” a competition where over 10 teams from the Caribbean compete in a hot food/culinary team competition, bartender competition and pastry competition.

According to Walt Disney, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”

This is indeed so for the 2014 Saint Lucia Culinary Team who performed exceptionally well at the Annual Taste of the Caribbean Competition. It was a tough competition according to participants but it was also an opportunity to show the world that Saint Lucia deserves a place in the spotlight.

On Thursday July 3rd 2014, a group of delegates from the Ministry of Tourism, Heritage and Creative Industries, Saint Lucia Tourist Board and the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) hosted a welcome back cocktail at Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa for the team upon their arrival.

At the cocktail reception, the Executive Vice President Noorani Azeez took the opportunity to congratulate the team on their success “I want to thank you profoundly for setting a fantastic stage for us to pursue as we lift the standards of culinary arts in Saint Lucia” and he also expressed his gratitude to Zina Haynes for working tirelessly to ensure that the team was ready for the competition.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mr Donavan Williams also applauded the team on their achievement “It’s a really good sign when you can demonstrate tangibly that your abilities can carry this expectation to provide us with the product that we have today.  SLHTA and CGM Gallagher to Launch Group Medical Insurance Plan for Employees of SLHTA Member Companies

The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association announces the engagement of CGM Gallagher Group for the provision of Group Medical Insurance for employees of SLHTA member companies.  The plan, which will seek to target 2000 employees in its initial phase, will allow for significantly discounted premiums for medical and health insurance for many workers who cannot afford independent medical insurance coverage.

Commenting on the engagement, SLHTA’s Membership Development Committee Chairman Mr. Andre Alexander noted that “This initiative has been in the pipeline for many months now and we are pleased to have received our Board’s approval to move it forward.”

The program, which is exclusive to member companies of the SLHTA, will seek to target many small and medium sized companies to sign up during its initial phase.  SLHTA’s 2nd Vice President Mr. Daniel Belizaire notes that “The plan is designed to strengthen the value for membership proposition for SLHTA members and their employees and its exclusivity to SLHTA member companies is key to its success.  CGM Gallagher is a proud member of the SLHTA and we welcome their willingness to meet our needs.”

Given the socio-economic shocks being experienced by both employees and employers of the local tourism and hospitality private sector, the plan will increase access and affordability for firms unable to negotiate similar benefits due to size constraints.

The official launch of the initiative took place on 2nd June 2014 at the Bay Gardens Hotel.

They were joined by Ladera, the BodyHoliday, and Sugar Beach in the top 20. Congratulations to these resorts on this international recognition!
